My Track and Field Experience

Being a senior, and having failed at making the varsity basketball team two years in a row, track and field was my only way of redemption, redemption for me. Track was my way to erase the guilt I felt inside for being too slow, out of shape, not quick enough, and not prepared enough. I made a false promise to myself junior year I would join track and field if I was cut, and fate had it so, I was cut. Laziness had showed up on my hand of fate, and unfortunately I passed up on track and field. Next year, again my dream was crushed, but in a way it was good thing, because it had finally hit me, that it was time I kick laziness out of myself and join track and field, I wanted to see how so many athletes at Logan were going from good to great athletes.

My first day, as corny as it may sound, was like that of a little kid in a candy shop. So many coaches I could go to, if I wanted help in any area. If I was looking to get my endurance to a point where nobody could breath clearly but me, I would look down at the 100 meter mark and Coach Webb would be there inspiring all the distance runners the importance of having heart. If I ever wanted to increase my flexibility of that of a snake, I would glance over at the starting 100 meter mark and see a short little man, but roaring like a lion, shouting commands of, “faster! Faster! Big steps! Big steps! Push yourself!” That man would be Coach Remi. If I ever wanted to be faster than lightning striking down on the surface, I would just look up at a towering figure, and just by his voice, and knowledge, you would know this man knew a thing or two about hard work, and that man is Coach Mike. And finally, if I wanted to increase my explosion and jump higher than anyone, I would look down the 50 yard line, and a figure would be walking down, carrying all of his tools in that red bag of his, everyday on the intent of making everyone the best athlete that person can be, and that man was Coach Brewer.

These people however, were not just intent on making everyone else and me a better athlete, that was just a fraction of it, they were all trying to make us better human beings. As the season went on I learned so many things, little things like, keep your feet dorsal flexed while running, or keep your arms locked at ninety degrees and use your shoulders to pump through, and drive your knee and thigh up to explode off the ground. But most importantly I learned life lessons such as Coach Brewer once telling me, “The world is a cruel place, but you just have to be yourself and be proud of who you are, no matter what,” and another great quote I will never forget such as, “Don’t worry about the other guy doing what he’s doing, just worry about yourself, and push yourself as far as you can, and be the best you can be.” I may have not ended up getting the best heights in high jump or long jump. But I can honestly say I took things from track such as, self respect, respect for the competition, hard work, and most importantly do everything full heartedly.

My experience with track and field can honestly be put as the best athletic program I’ve been with in high school. For that alone, I would just like to thank the man who made all this possible for every track and fielder, that is Coach Lee Webb, I know you are reading this, as well so many others seniors paragraphs, I would like to thank you so much for the opportunity you have given me and my fellow teammates, you honestly have changed my life so much, and I mean that. Hopefully in the future, I will use the lessons I have learned from you, Coach Brewer, the drops of sweat that have trickled down my forehead, the sun burning me, the high jump pole hitting my backside countless of times, and every other memorable experience I have gone through.

Thank you so much Coach Webb!!!!
